Federal Government Announces Rs 1 Per Litre Petrol Price Cut Amid Fluctuating Global Oil Rates

In a bid to provide slight relief to consumers, the federal government has announced a Rs 1 per litre reduction in petrol prices for the next fortnight, effective March 29, 2025. The new price for petrol will now be Rs 254.63 per litre, down from Rs 255.63, according to a notification from the Finance Division.

However, the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has been left unchanged at Rs 258.64 per litre. The government’s decision comes as global oil prices continue to fluctuate, prompting adjustments to domestic fuel rates.

Price Breakdown:

ProductsExisting PriceNew PriceIncrease/Decrease
PetrolRs 255.63Rs 254.63– Rs 1.00
High-Speed DieselRs 258.64Rs 258.64No Change

The Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) calculated the new prices based on fluctuations in international oil markets, as detailed in the notification.

This is the second consecutive fortnightly review of petroleum prices, following the previous adjustment on March 15, 2025.

Impact on Consumers

The reduction in petrol prices is expected to offer some relief, particularly to middle and lower-middle-class families who rely on petrol for daily commuting. Petrol is predominantly used in private vehicles, rickshaws, and two-wheelers, making its price a key concern for many citizens.

Meanwhile, high-speed diesel remains a critical fuel for the transport sector, with its unchanged price likely to continue influencing the cost of goods and services. Diesel-powered vehicles, including heavy goods trucks, buses, and agricultural machinery, are central to the country’s transportation and farming industries. The price of HSD is often linked to inflationary pressures, especially as it contributes to the rising cost of essential items such as vegetables and foodstuffs.
